Bonn (dpa/gms) - Winter coats for dogs are in the most cases unnecessary. «A healthy dog doesn't need a winter coat», says Thomas Schröder, federal director of the German Animal Protection Association in Bonn.

Only after medical attendances or if the pet was breeded without hairs, a piece of drapery should provide protection against coldness and wind. If a dog has a fresh lesion or was sheared before an operation, a scarf or something similar could be advisable to keep the pet warm.

If you put on your dog a winter coat it should be absolutely appropriate to the species. It shouldn't be to tight or choking, says Schröder. «Priority have the requirements of the animals and not the fashionable requirements of the owner.»

Somebody who wants to do something good for his dog on a cold winter day, can dry it with a towel after romping in the snow, according to Schröder. If it is especially cold and the wind is very frosty you should choose shorter routes for your walk.
